This project contemplates the methodology and principles of landscape architecture and sustainable urban design and planning for a new ecological city in Halong Bay, Vietnam. The projects offers modern architectural forms, proven technologies and advanced development, while referencing the local architecture, characteristics and lifestyle of the area. In strong opposition to the anonymity of the 'International Style' and the anachronism of 'Historicist Formalism', the project proposes a strategic approach based on a number of key tenets: sustainability, ecology, typological innovation and transformation. The large site, covering approximately 800 hectares, and the unique qualities of the overall landscape and adjoining UNESCO World Heritage site represented a major challenge in terms of profile and fit, these were overcome with use of the topographical features and careful planning in the schemes overall design.
